Ellie Robert is here to review the latest Disney re-release:

Re-released Toy Story 2 is among the barrage of recent films to be given the silly glasses treatment. Following the return of the original Toy Story and pre-empting the arrival of Toy Story 3, nostalgic 90’s kids and excitable little ones are now donning 3D specs to return to the now visually enhanced world of Andy’s room, and beyond.

As a rare good sequel to the original, everyone’s favourite animated cowboy, Woody (Tom Hanks) returned to the big screen in 1999. Now he’s back again, only more vivid.

The story picks up with Woody being kidnapped by Al of Al’s Toy Barn (Wayne Knight), a large chicken-suited toy collector desperate to make his fortune. When Woody meets his long lost round-up gang he has a decision to make: should he become a collector’s item and spend the rest of his days behind glass, or should he try to capture the remnants of a growing boy’s love. Of course, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is on the case, along with the other faithful and resilient characters of the first film.

The sheer charm of Woody and his gang is frankly enough to make Toy Story 2 3D an enjoyable experience. But in comparison to the likes of the highly acclaimed 3D film Avatar, with graphics that not only add depth but also help bring the world to life, this film as a 3D experience doesn’t compare. Technologically, Toy Story 2 has clearly been revamped with sharper shapes and brighter colours but this doesn’t add any real substance to the film itself. But then again, Toy Story 2 will never be the deliberately formulated action-packed bonanza that 3D is perhaps best made for. Nevertheless, watching Toy Story 2 in 3D certainly doesn’t detract from the original wit and humour which won the audience first time round.

It is still a delight to see Woody and Buzz back on the big screen; even if it is just a friendly reunion and welcome taster for what is to come in the summer. If Toy Story 2 has somehow escaped you, this film is definitely worth catching whilst it’s still on at the cinema. If you’ve seen it before, save your pennies for Toy Story 3.
