Written by one of comedy’s bright young sparks and featuring a cast of young stand-ups and sketch comedians whose cumulative star rating this festival must be well into the hundreds, Party was always going to be one of those talked-about shows that everyone wanted to see. And as such it benefitted from a very receptive audience, prepared to laugh away at every little joke. Despite my unusually low levels of cynicism (given the levels of hype) on entering the show, I actually found my experience of the play struggling to reach the heady heights of expectation.

As you might expect from a bunch of fairly established circuit comedians, the cast’s timing is spot on. Tom Basden’s script, however, is occasionally a little predictable. Perhaps this is to do with the expectation that a play featuring so many comedians will have us doubled up with laughter at every utterance, but a lot of the quick-fire exchanges are more on the level of your more intelligent mates’ best banter than the pinnacle of comic dialogue. When hilarity does come, it’s of a subdued and subtle nature. Rather than the whole audience roaring with laughter at the jokes, certain lines draw explosive guffaws from just one or two people: it’s that kind of close-to-the-bone, social, recognisable character comedy where everyone can pick up on some familiar moment of social awkwardness.

Comedy Awards Best Newcomer nominee Jonny Sweet does smarmy par excellence, with a curiously sinister manner that makes your skin crawl as you titter nervously; Tim Key is a subtle joy as the bullied and rather simple Duncan, a pawn in the others’ power games; Nick Mohammed’s cameo as a rejected one-night-mistake is utterly adorable. No doubt, then, the cast is stellar (or soon should be) and they have a group chemistry that allows for some great on-stage squabbling, but it’s perhaps the writing that needs polishing in order to propel Party up into the realms of truly great comic theatre.
