Rap Guide to Evolution
The Rap Guide to Evolution
This show marries my two current loves, nerdy men and hip hop!! Mind you, Baba Brinkman is not your typical nerd; he’s what I’d call an incredibly intellectual version of Eminem! Baba, a Canadian rapper, takes the audience through a lyrical guide to Darwin's theory of evolution. Admittedly, with a mother who is a lecturer in Biology, I'm used to lectures on the beginnings of mankind, yet this was defiantly a more exciting version.
Personally, although his rapping talents injected with intellectual facts were fantastic, the show did become a little monotonous in places. Brinkman uses a simple PowerPoint denoting each chapter of his guide in black and white and raps over a backing track. Sometimes, simplicity is key, especially for a Fringe performance, but I was dying to hear/see something more from the show, perhaps a live band whilst Brinkman raps or a more visual PowerPoint? Mind you, some may say the minimal set-up allows the intimate audience to concentrate solely on his verse.
The show allows a varied audience, from A-level student to professor, musician to mother, to be entertained. Also, a much-in-demand CD is available for purchase after the show, and should be a brilliant early Xmas gift for friends, parents or lecturers!! Don't worry if you hate hip hop as you will still enjoy it! And if you love hip hop, you can give yourself an intellectual edge by watching this show!
