The Inside Track: The Son(s)

The Son(s) is a band previously hailing from Edinburgh, to be honest they’re not as obscure as they’d have you believe, having recently gotten some airtime on BBC Radio 6, and they’re one of the biggest names on Soundcloud, and obviously there is reason for their popularity. I would like to steer clear of comparisons as the Son(s) are worthy of a listen without any preconceived ideas, however, immediately when listening to ‘Dogs, Boys & Men’, the single found on the inside track, you can hear the ethereal lament, soothingly reminiscent of Bon Iver. Listening to the self- acclaimed avante-garde-jazz-classical music produced by the band, with the novel use of harps and ukuleles is an achingly beautiful experience!!

The single on the inside track album, ‘Dogs, Boys & Men’, is an especially energetic track, from a band that otherwise makes more soothing euphoric sounds. Of this comment, the son(s) explained, “That track came together very quickly, from something a friend of ours said. They said they only cared about Dogs, Boys & Men and in that order (of descending importance). The force with which the phrase was said meant the song had to be quite forceful too. We like to try to do both kinds of songs, slow ones AND fast ones.”

The Son(s) are working on a planned new album to be released on CD, Vinyl and for download, and in their generous nature, they don’t expect you to pay a penny for the pleasure of listening; “I think we'll only charge for the CD/vinyl version but we hope to make those worth owning, at least for folk that like the music in the first place. We've made the songs and we'd like you to hear them but we don't especially want/expect to profit from them, so we'll charge you what it costs us to make the physical things.” But the band is not just busy working on the upcoming EP, they also have a video in the works, as well as a song on another forthcoming compilation record.
The Son(s) is obviously not for you if you are a pop chart hits follower, but takes this smooth acoustic folk sound to another level, and is definitely a band to look out for in the future.
