First Year Thieves steal the stage

Tuesday 10th November - Whistle Binkies

Tuesday night band showcases at Whistle Binkies feature some of the very best unsigned bands from in and around Edinburgh. Hidden just off the Royal Mile, stairs descend down to the underground venue.

Local 5-piece First Year Thieves take to the stage and open the night with their distinctive indie pop sound. Front man Scott Peddie’s vocals are impressive and the floor soon becomes crowded. Not even technical difficulties, namely a terrible sound technician, stop Peddie as he breaks into another upbeat chorus.

Their sound is defined by guitarist Frazer Smith’s playing. Actually, it’s hard not to get the feeling that the rest of the band are playing around his inspired melodies.

The band is at its best when they break into ‘Falling’. An alternative blend of stomping drums and indie guitar picking with added crunch, hinting at the song writing talent behind this band.

Soon they are getting heads nodding from even the staunchest old men at the back of the bar. But the set is over, and the crowd audibly sighs as the band leave the stage, before returning to their pints.

You can check out the band at www.myspace.com/firstyearthieves. If you don’t mind the bedroom recordings, other songs to listen out for are ‘Summer Sun’ and ‘Lies and Tired Eyes’. First Year Thieves are soon to be recording their debut EP.
