FRESH AIR MUSIC TEAM GIG GUIDE OCTOBER 2016

OCTOBER 2ND MAXIMO PARK LIQUID ROOMS EDINBURGH

JERRY MORIARTY: Loud, frantic and erratic guitar-driven rock, the former Mercury Prize nominated Newcastle Band bring tonnes of energy to the stage. For the perfect example of what to expect, check out ‘Our Velocity’ or ‘Give, Get, Take’.

OCTOBER 3RD THE FALL LA BELLE ANGELE EDINBURGH

RICHARD DUFFY: I like them because they’re probably the strangest band in the world - pretty much nothing Mark E Smith says or does makes much sense. However they somehow produce incredibly interesting and addictive music and do live shows that are wildly unpredictable.

OCTOBER 4TH UB40 USHER HALL EDINBURGH

CHARLES T LANG: Legends of the game, UB40 helped bring reggae music to the forefront of the UK music scene back in the day. Whatever may be, they will always give me a warm feeling inside. And they will always be my da’s favourite band ever.

OCTOBER 4TH MITSKI + TRUST FUND STEREO GLASGOW

ELINOR O’DONOVAN: Even though I’ve never met her, I feel like I’m friends with Mitski. In every song she bares such an intense personal side of herself that you actually feel close to her, as if you’ve known her for a long time. Her last album Puberty 2, is beautiful and catchy and dark and in many ways reminds me of St Vincent- although Mitski is a lot more down-to-earth than the alien that is Annie Clark. Mitski is clever and cynical and writes beautiful music. Puberty 2 is an absolute indie rock triumph. Side note: She’s also really funny, go follow her on twitter: @mitskileaks.

OCTOBER 6TH HONEYBLOOD ELECTRIC CIRCUS EDINBURGH

CAMERON COSGROVE: These Scottish indie punk gems are only getting better! Their first feedback filled album was my OST of summer last year and they are back with some new songs (yay!). Sweet and loud, Honeyblood are certainly worth a listen.

OCTOBER 7TH PAPER KITES CAVES EDINBURGH

JOANNA HEAD: The Paper Kites are a band who seem to be able to handle a range of different genres with ease. You can hear their progression of musical ideas as you listen to each album. Their hit single ‘Bloom’ shows clear folk influence, the sound being dreamy and steeped in nostalgia. Their most recent studio album ‘twelvefour’ is equally wonderful, leaning more towards the alternative rock and indie sound. The overall effect is one of focus, it is upbeat whilst retaining an otherworldly quality.

OCTOBER 8TH MYSTERY JETS LIQUID ROOMS EDINBURGH

CAMERON MCALLISTER: Mystery Jets are well known for their unique and ever evolving audio style. Having recently pioneered a genre of their own invention - namely “space rock” - with their latest full length LP ‘the curve of the earth’ and accompanying EP ‘the whole earth’ they continue to redefine themselves as with their ‘radlands’ LP. Their latest efforts unashamedly flaunt the influence of acts like Pink Floyd and King Crimson featuring melancholy lyrics and mesmerisingly peaceful piano accompaniments to evocative guitar solos.

OCTOBER 9TH AKALA LIQUID ROOMS EDINBURGH

OCTOBER 9TH SUZANNE VEGA QUEEN’S HALL EDINBURGH

OCTOBER 12TH KANO LIQUID ROOMS EDINBURGH

OCTOBER 15TH ANGEL OLSEN SWG3 GLASGOW

OCTOBER 20TH JAGWAR MA THE ART SCHOOL GLASGOW

OCTOBER 20TH TELEMAN ELECTRIC CIRCUS EDINBURGH

LIZZI GINSBERG: On tour for their newest release “Brilliant Sanity” London indie pop band Teleman is the newest project of the Sanders brothers (formerly Pete and the Pirates). Kinda synthy kinda psychedelic- the whole album is utterly catchy. Definitely worth a listen.

OCTOBER 23RD WARPAINT QUEEN’S HALL EDINBURGH

OCTOBER 23RD DAUGHTER O2 ACADEMY GLASGOW

OCTOBER 24TH WE ARE SCIENTISTS LIQUID ROOMS EDINBURGH

OCTOBER 27TH MATT BERRY AND THE MAYPOLES LIQUID ROOMS EDINBURGH

JERRY MORIARTY: With the release of his new album The Small Hours, Matt Berry has proven that he is more than just a comedic actor who dabbles in music. Toning down the jokes he once littered in past songs in favour of a more Father John Misty like satirical take on society, and with backing from the extremely talented Maypoles, expect catchy jazz-inspired folk rock with plenty of instrumental solos and some extremely inspired lyrics.

OCTOBER 28TH THE LUMINEERS USHER HALL EDINBURGH

OCTOBER 29TH BIRDY CORN EXCHANGE EDINBURGH
