The Barclaycard Premiership race was reinvigorated over the weekend as Manchester United were bruised in a 4-1 thrashing against main title rivals Liverpool.  Liverpool fell behind after 23 minutes after Pepe Reina brought down Ji-Sun Park inside the box leaving Christiano Ronaldo to bag his 13th of the season.  The penalty meant United looked on course to extend their advantage at the top of the table over their Merseyside rivals. Liverpool’s persistence forced Vidic into making an error, handing them a lifeline as Torres coolly slotted home to level the sides.  Before the interval Liverpool were able to take the lead after Gerrard scored a penalty resulting from a foul by Patrice Evra.  Vidic’s afternoon got even worse when he clumsily brought down Gerrard on the edge of the box, allowing Fabio Aurelio to stylishly find the net from the resulting free-kick, as the United defender made his way down the tunnel for an early bath.  Andrea Dossena completed United’s miserable afternoon, lobbing Van der Sar to inflict the heaviest defeat on United at Old Trafford since QPR won by the same scoreline back in 1992.

The result means there is only a 4 point gap between the two teams yet United do have a game in hand which could take them 7 points clear.  However, without Vidic, who until yesterday was surely a contender for player of the season, for the next 3 games the red half of Merseyside must surely fancy their chances of catching the defending champions especially if they continue to replicate their European form on the domestic stage.
