When I was in first year, the then-manager of FreshAir told me that each university year from then on would go faster than the last. Turns out he was right (thanks Vause), as I can’t quite believe we’re here - a mere matter of hours away from my last ever Freshers Week!
Not that I’m complaining - Freshers is one of my favourite weeks of the year (even at my relative old-age as I approach fourth year - eeeek). I love talking to new people, I love talking about FreshAir, and call me cheesy but I love the idea that we could be welcoming the next Greg James or Lauren Laverne into our society without even knowing it yet. For all these reasons, me and the rest of the committee have been working extra-specially hard to make sure that this Freshers week is one to remember. We’ve even renamed it - FreshAIRS Week (who can resist a play on words?)!
If you’re one of the thousands of new students hitting Edinburgh over the next few days, here’s my guide to everything FreshAir will be up to as you plan your week. Whether you want to join the society as a member or whether you’re just interested in tuning in to the station, there’s something for everyone!
A selection of our esteemed presenters will be broadcasting live from the Potterrow Dome from Sunday-Friday to give you a taste of the wide selection of shows we broadcast on FreshAir, and to soundtrack your freshers week in style. We’ll also be broadcasting live from both days of the societies fair (Wednesday and Thursday 11-4) and from the New Amphion on Friday night, 5-11pm.
FreshAir Street Team
Our street team will be wandering campus looking for YOU. Armed with our ‘roving photobooth’ (props included..) and portable microphones, they’re looking for fun pictures for our facebook page and chats we can use on the radio - tell us your freshers week highlight so far or what you’re most excited about doing! They’ll also be welcoming those of you who are moving into Pollock Halls on Sunday - say hello! They might even have balloons…
Voice of FreshAir
We’re looking for the new Voice(s) of FreshAir, to record our new jingles for the year. Do you want your voice heard by thousands of students as we play out in Teviot all year long? Then come along to the societies fair, 11-4 on Wednesday and Thursday to try your hand.
You can catch us at our own events all week, or at the EUSA events where our DJs will be providing a helping hand:
Sunday 8th - Catch FreshAir DJs repping the station in EUSA’s headphone part. 8pm-1am in McEwan Hall.
Tuesday 10th - FreshAir’s Mega Pub Quiz! Get those brains warmed up with our pub quiz, complete with prizes. Teviot Underground from 8pm.
Thursday 12th - Twist and Shout - Make your debut at our monthly 50s and 60s night - Edinburgh’s most famous! The Annexe, Cowgate from 11pm.
Friday 13th - It might be Friday 13th, but there’ll be no bad vibes at our Headphone Rave. Teviot Debating Hall, 9pm.
Saturday 14th - It’s the most important event of the week, Freshers Ball! FreshAir will be there with you every step of the way, DJing ahead of the headliners. From 8pm in Teviot
We’ll be podcasting highlights each day. Find our podcasts on this very website, and listen in to see if your interview has made the cut!
Come along to our stall at Freshers Fair where we’ll be giving away our famous goodie bags, complete with pens, posters and much, much more! We’re also running a competition all week long in celebration of FreshAIRS Week. Just ‘like’ our facebook page and share this picture to be in with a chance of winning a bottle of Jose Cuervo tequila and a year’s free entry to Twist and Shout!
So there you have it, a week packed full of FreshAir fun. We look forward to seeing you there!
Have a great FreshAIRS Week. x
